How to import a car from the USA to Nigeria

If you dream of coasting down back roads in a new or new-to-you luxury car, the only thing standing between you and your dreamy new vehicle might be importing the car from the USA to Nigeria.

So how can you bring your baby to your home country after making a purchase? The process doesn’t have to be difficult if you work with Auto Auction Mall. But even if you go with another site or prefer to manage your own shipping, you can navigate the import process with just a few simple steps. Bureaucratic Issues Associated With Shipping Cars to Nigeria A few decades ago, Nigerians could easily afford new American cars, and these cars could readily be found on Nigerian roads. But when the nation sought assistance through structural adjustment programs (SAP), the value of the Nigerian Naira plummeted, causing inflation to skyrocket and putting American cars squarely out of reach for the average Nigerian.

Nigerians, ever devotees of American consumer products, responded to this challenge by increasingly purchasing their cars used. The Internet revolution made the practice even easier, providing a number of online auction sites where cars could be purchased at a steep discount. Today, Nigerians face a number of restrictions on what they can and cannot import: • With the exception of some trucks and buses, you cannot import cars that are over 10 years old. • US customs rules prohibit exports containing additional items, so you cannot purchase cars with items loaded in the car or its trunk.

• Shipping usually takes three to four weeks. • The underground economy continues to take advantage of exports to Nigeria, so it’s important to research the reputation of any shipping company or shipping agent you use. • Leaving your car at the shipping yard for any extended period of time is a risky undertaking, since criminals may steal the car, or break into the car and begin stripping it for parts. IF this happens, you’ll have no recourse unless you purchased insurance on the car. Even then, the insurance may only cover damages incurred during shipping, not damages that occurred after the vehicle’s arrival in Nigeria.

• Sales tax is usually 5%. You will also have to pay duty taxes on all imports, though the specific amount of the tax varies greatly. Shipping a Car Through a Shipping Agent If you prefer to manage your own shipping, or if you buy somewhere other than Auto Auction Mall, the safest and most efficient way to ship your new vehicle from USA to Nigeria is to hire a shipping agent. The process can be a relatively lengthy one, taking as long as three months: • Find an international car shipping agent, and be sure to check online reviews or ask for references, since just about anyone can put up a website and call themselves a shipping agent. • Complete paperwork with the shipping agency, which may require you to provide detailed information about the car, yourself, and the location to which you are shipping the vehicle. • Provide the agent with access to the car, keys, and title. If you are currently in Nigeria, this will likely require you to coordinate the process with the location from which you purchased the car. • Wait for the agent to complete the bill of lading. • Pay the shipping fee. You may have to pay immediately, or when the car departs. Some agents require a deposit upfront, and then a final payment after the car departs from the USA to Nigeria. • Send the bill of lading to your clearing agent, who will clear the car from the port. • When the car arrives in the port, pick it up.

Working with a shipping agent saves you the time and trouble of arranging shipping, and may also help you avoid some paperwork. You’ll still be responsible for duties and other taxes, and depending upon the shipping agent, may have to pay for insurance. It usually costs between $1,000-$2,000 to work with a car shipping agent.

A schoolboy made a phone that does not need airtime

There are many talented individuals in the society, people who are considered geniuses due to their creativity and ability to produce objects that are considered useful. A grade 12 schoolboy in Namibia has broken the internet by creating a sim-less mobile phone that does not need airtime. This means that the phone can make calls without loading any credit card on it.

Simon Petrus who is a student at Abraham Iyambo senior secondary school made the phone using spare parts from a television set and a phone. The sim-less phone has power supplied to it through a radiator and is able to make calls using radio frequencies. The phone does not only make calls, it also allows the user to watch a television channel on it because it was created using a radio system that is attached to a box. The making of this phone is not Petrus’ maiden attempt at invention. He was reported to have invented a dual purpose machine which dries seeds and also act as a cooler at the same time. This invention made him win a gold medal at the national level. The parents of this young lad have always been his pillar of support; they believe so much in him as they keep sponsoring him despite the fact that they are unemployed. Young Petrus wants his invention to be a huge success so he would be encouraged to move on from that point. Petrus’ invention is considered to be the latest in the sets of inspiring and creative projects handled by students in that part of the world.

It is inspiring seeing the young ones in the society taking on projects that are educative, challenging and motivating at the same time. In the same region, Joshua Nghaamwa has been said to create a satellite from radio parts, cell phones and other electronics around. This satellite was made in order to improve the speed of internet connectivity in that region. The satellite device created can be connected to a modem and phone through the USB port. The young satellite inventor wants to do this as his own contribution to the development of ICT in Africa as he aspires to have his work sold in the African markets. Nigerians are also working hard when it comes to inventing objects. The intriguing part of their creativity is that some of these people do not have access to education. It is exciting seeing people who have never been to school put things together and make something remarkable.

Man's family uses funny picture to announce his obituary

An unidentified man’s obituary was announced in a ‘funny’ way. When a loved one dies, the bereaved are usually thrown into a period of mourning and possible sober reflection. The family then proceed with plans to give the dead a befitting burial, that usually portrays the kind of life the person lived. Usually, if the family can afford to, a ‘lavish’ funeral party is thrown, with beautiful pictures of the person displayed on both funeral brochures and banners. ..

In Adansi Praso, Ghana, a dead man’s obituary was announced with an unusual picture. A picture of him drinking a bottle of beer, was used, which leaves room for the question “was this man a known drunkard?” See the picture below:

Is it that there was no better picture of him or what?

A dog was named Buhari Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, a trader in Ogun state has been arrested for naming his dog Buhari. Chinakwe was arrested after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari. According to Vanguard, Chinakwe told his friend to kill the dog and eat the meat as his accuser and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail. A relation to the suspect, identified as Chiedozie, said Chinakwe was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail.

“Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari. Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.”

But a police source said “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.” Confirming the arrest of the trader, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun state, Abimbola Oyeyemi said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details.

“I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.”

He added that; “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.” But the spokesman said the dog will be used as evidence against the suspect; “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it.”
