Top 3 Nigerian banks where staff do not work in fear

The mass sacking of personnel from various
banks in Nigeria has in recent time stirred
panic in the hearts of many Nigerians,
especially the young ones graduating daily
from various higher institutions across the
country.
What is the way forward for the sacked
professionals?
An economic melt-down has been blamed for
the mass sacking of bank staff, a
development which has caused very heated
debates at various levels, causing many to
doubt the possibility of a future for young
Nigerian professionals.
It is no news that Nigeria has so many
youths (graduates) loitering the streets, with
hopelessness boldly written on their faces.
However, even as the hardship struck hard at
the Nigerian economy, three banks were
outstanding in the sense that they did not lay
off staff, a feat which many of our new
generation banks must strive to attain.
Below are the top three outstanding Nigerian
banks which did not lay off their staff in
troves. It is remarkable to note this because
so many lives were destroyed, families
broken due to the massive retrenchment of
the times.

3. Guaranty Trust Bank
Having clinched the African Banker Award for
innovation in 2016 under the leadership of Mr
Segun Agbaje, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB)
has kept a very good record. Beyond bringing
simple banking for every Nigerian regardless
of class, GTB has kept in line with their
principle of being an employer of choice
which goes beyond the regular pay package.
GTB within the year in focus was one of the
leading banks in terms of training and
mentoring staff. Leveraging advancements in
technology to pioneer innovative products,
there is no doubt that their rapidly growing
customer base has help them to keep and
nurture their staff even in the face of a dying
economy.
2. Zenith Bank Plc
With over 500 branches and business offices
in prime commercial centres in all states of
the federation and the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT), there is no doubt that Zenith
Bank is one of the largest in Africa. But being
large is not all it takes in the banking
industry; hence Zenith has continued to grow
operating on a culture of excellence and strict
adherence to global best practices.
Having grown its shareholder’s fund of
N20million in 1990 to N509.25billion as at
year end 2013, one can easily understand
how this bank has been able to maintain its
staff, seeing to their welfare and ensuring
that they are not let go into the oblivion of
the Nigerian economy.

1. Fidelity Bank Plc
Without mincing words, Fidelity is
undoubtedly among the fastest growing
commercial banks in Nigeria today. With a
stable and innovative management as led by
(Nnamdi Okonkwo), this bank’s staff are
jealously admired in the banking industry. The
bank has earned itself a reputation for quick
service and SME banking.
University graduates also often seek to join
the bank because of its graduate and
leadership training programs. Little wonder
why in 2014, Fidelity Bank announced the
promotion of 963 out of its employees, on
conclusion of its 2014 annual staff
performance appraisal.
These three Nigerian banks have
distinguished themselves and as such
deserve worthy mention. This piece has been
written as to give upcoming professionals in
the banking sector an idea of where they can
build their carrier without fear of sudden
retrenchment, as well as to urge other banks
within the sector to stop the massive
dismissal of their staff, as this has a grave
adverse effect on Nigeria as a nation.

Letter to President Buhari

– President Muhammadu Buhari has been
lampooned by a good number of Nigerians
including the vice president of the
Commonwealth Medical Association, Dr
Osahon Enabulele regarding his medical trip
to London for ear infection
– Professor Julius Abiola Ademokoya, a
seasoned professor of Speech and Hearing
Rehabilitation said the public should be
better informed and enlightened on diseases
related to the ear, as Nigerians have
continued to pour venom on President Buhari
for neglecting Nigerian hospitals to seek
treatment overseas
– Oladipupo Omojeje, an indigene of Lagos
state writes a letter to the president of
Africa’s most populous nation on why he
thinks Buhari is not walking the talk
Nigeria is facing enormous problems as of
present. Going to every nook and cranny of
the country will overtly prove this. Apart from
Nigerians finding solution to the daily rat
race they are used to, the good people of
Nigeria are good at discussing issues that
are germane to the growth and development
of the country.

Every Niger Deltan is an Avenger

Editor’s Note: The Niger Delta is once again
seeing attacks on oil installations by
militants, most notably the Niger Delta
Avengers. The controversial group is making
Nigerians everywhere consider what can be
done to avoid conflict. Naij.com reader Paul
Toruwei has sent us his thoughts, read his
words.
The National President of the Niger Delta
development movement (NDDM) Mr Paul
Toruwei condemned the recurrent bombings
of oil pipeline facilities across the Niger Delta
region by militants, saying that there were
other means of handling this kind of issue.
He said the people of the region, especially
the Ijaws, have been neglected and
marginalised for too long.
The failure of the so-called amnesty
programme has also contributed to what is
happening in the region.

Paul Toruwei said the Niger Delta region as
of today is still the golden goose laying the
golden eggs and it will be suicidal for military
action to be sustained against the militants.
Paul Toruwei and the Secretary of the Niger
Delta development movement Mr Dango
Anthony implored the federal government not
to match fire for fire with the militants but
instead engage in dialogue with them to find
an enduring solution to the resurgence of
violence.
The Avengers should avenge themselves
legally, in line with the law.

Nigeria: Our space program is not an 'ego trip'

Leading the nascent Nigerian
space program is one really tough
gig.
There is no billion dollar budget. The labs and
equipment are far from cutting edge. The
agency's museum sits empty.
New challenges lurk around every corner. Yet S.
O. Mohammed, director general of the Nigerian
National Space Research and Development
Agency (NASRDA), is determined to wring
scientific achievements out of his shoestring
budget.
"We have always said ... the Nigerian space
program is not going to be an ego trip,"
Mohammed told CNNMoney.
"We are not part of the race for the moon, we're
not part the race for Mars," he continued. "What
we need to look at is using the space program to
look at how we can create typical Nigerian
solutions to most of our problems."
Mohammed's goals include the ability to locally
design and build a satellite by 2018. By 2030, he
hopes to launch a satellite from Nigerian territory.
After that? He wants to put a man to the moon.
Full coverage: Nigeria: An Economy Divided
Yet Mohammed faces intense scrutiny. Critics
want to know why Nigeria is spending money on
a space program when 70% of its citizens live
below the poverty line. When the country's
economy is facing an imminent recession?
Moreover, what's the point of a moon mission
that would launch more than 60 years after Apollo
11?
Mohammed points to the country's three existing
satellites as evidence of what can be gained from
a national space program. Already, they've helped
document regional climate change patterns and
update the country's outdated maps.
They've also been useful in tracking the
movements of terrorist group Boko Haram in
remote areas of the country.

Mohammed's next priority is launching a
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite capable
of penetrating cloud coverage. The images it
produces should help monitor activity in the Gulf
of Guinea, which has recently seen a rise in pirate
activity.
Mohammed says these projects are about
"capacity building" -- advancements that will
eventually turn Nigeria into a regional space
innovation hub.
Look no further, he says, than NASRDA's 2,000-
member staff. Mohammed recalls that when he
started at the agency eight years ago, it boasted
just six scientists with PhDs. Now, the number of
PhDs on staff has increased to 70, and another 50
employees are studying in pursuit of advanced
degrees.
NASRDA has been granted $20 million this
financial year to keep operations going, but it
needs $65 million more to get its next satellite
project off the ground.
Mohammed says the money will be put to good
use -- after all, Nigeria is building on the efforts
of others.
"We're not reinventing the wheel," he said. "The
Nigerian model is a good model for the developing
world. We're not starting all over like the U.S. or
Russia."

Don’t add these people as friends on Facebook

When you are added as a friend on Facebook
by someone who is already in your contact
list, be careful! It might be a fraud.

The scheme of fraud
First, a copy of a real Facebook profile is
made with the real photos and personal data
added. Then the felons begin to add friends
from the victim’s contact list.
Many people add a new friend seeing a
familiar name and face. By no means should
you do it, unless you make sure it is the real
account of your friend or relative.
Experts warn, that you provide the felons
with your personal information when you add
a fake friend.

They will be aware of your
posts, location, birth date etc. They also will
be able to send messages to your friends on
your behalf in order to gather more
information about you or to borrow money
from them.
Research shows that fake accounts are
used to con people into borrowing
money which is never returned.
Be careful! When you get a friend application
from someone who is already in your contact
list, make sure that the request is not a fake.
Ignore the requests from perfect strangers!
In addition, it is recommended to use more
strict privacy settings. It is better to give a
friends-only access to your profile, photos,
etc.
Another way to protect your account, is to
limit the access to your friend list.

To do it,
open Friends tab and choose Friends in the
line Who can see your friend list?
A story of a fraud victim
“One day I got a request from Inna, a distant
relative who I don’t see very often. It
looked strange, as she was in my friend list
by that time. But I thought that her old
account could have been blocked and added
her. A few minutes later, the new friend
texted me, and after a short exchange I got a
very peculiar message:
“I am so happy! Just imagine, I got 200 000
grivnas by National Help Campaign! They
help the retired, the disabled and the poor,
just like us, to improve our lives”.
After this I knew it was a fraud. I
informed my real relative, whose profile was
still active, that her page was copied.

I also
noticed that a fake Inna had 34 friends added
the same time as me. There was just a few
photos on her page and the ridiculous
spelling mistakes made me think of a fake”.
This story is just one of thousands.
How to protect your account

1. Check your friend requests thoroughly.
Take a closer look at the profiles of your new
aquaintances. Make sure the request is not
sent by someone from your contact list.

2. Remember that your friends can be hacked
too. Do not click the links they send to you
thoughtlessly.

3. Pay attention to the grammar and spelling
of the messages. Misprints and ridiculous
mistakes are characteristic of dodgers.

4. Check your friends’ page. When a friend of
yours unexpectedly begins to post quick
earning schemes, celebrity gossip or requests
for material help, you should inform the
owner of an account directly. When a person
rarely sees their Facebook page, they might
be unaware of being hacked.
Remember! Your safety depends on you!
