Chris Kwekowe rejects offer from Bill Gates

In what many have described as a surprising
move, Chris Kwekowe who is an entrepreneur has
rejected a job offer from Bill Gates

According to Newsweek.europe, the 23-year-old
computer science graduate of the Lagos State
University rejected an offer from the richest man
on earth shortly after winning the 2015 Anzisha
Prize which came with a $25,000 cheque.
Kwekowe said he was offered the position at
software engineer at Microsoft but declined it in
order to build his own start-up, Slatecube, a
website aimed at helping other young Nigerians
find jobs.
"When I told him, Gates was intrigued and he
smiled. After the programme, all the directors
were like, ‘Dude, you mean you actually turned
down a job at Microsoft and had the guts to tell
Bill Gates?’

Kwekowe and his brother, Emerald founded their
start-up in October 2014 and funded it though by
freelancing as web designers and running a
software solutions firm.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: " Oh yeah, I did
meet with Bill Gates in Durban, South Africa where
we had some candid discussion about everything
- from his involvement with charitable causes in
the continent, to how he makes time to be a
great father for his kids. My favourite moments
were watching his reaction after I told him I
turned down job offers from Microsoft and the
likes to pursue something more defining for me,
and how Africa's development depends more on
sustainable investments in innovative social
startups like Slatecube that solve some of the
continent's biggest problems, rather than
donating entirely to charity organisations who end
up requiring more financial injection to deal with
the minutest of issues.
"Anyways, we'd be working with the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation to make our value
proposition at Slatecube a pan-African privilege.
Soon, you'd rather be in demand across the
globe, and engage in companies and projects that
make you better, and suits your career goals.
Nothing can really be better"

Reasons Why Nigerians want NYSC to be scrapped

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was
initiated in 1973 to facilitate national integration
and bridge cultural and ethnic gaps in a
heterogeneous country like Nigeria.
The objectives of the one-year compulsory
program for Nigerian graduates are clearly spelt
out in Decree No.51 of 16th June 1993.

The programme is an avenue for Nigerians to
serve their fatherland in whatever part of the
country they are posted to.
Over the years, the scheme has been abused and
it appears it is no longer achieving its objectives.
Many Nigerians have been complaining about the
scheme and have been calling for it to be
scrapped.
Here are reasons Nigerians want NYSC to be
scrapped.
1. It has outlived its usefulness
The major aim of NYSC is to foster national unity
by posting Nigerian graduates to places other
than their home states. National unity has been
given as an argument for retaining the
programme. Many are of the opinion that the
scheme has outlived its usefulness and failed to
achieve its objectives to a large extent. The
scheme is now 43 years old but can Nigeria really
boast of being united?

achieve its objectives to a large extent. The

boast of being united?

2. Turning corps members to corpse
There have been calls for the scrapping of the
scheme, following the death of some corps
members in some parts of the country. Some
corps members have lost their lives to election
violence, others to health challenges. Recently,
three Nigerian graduates, Ukeme Monday
deployed to Zamfara, Elechi Chinyerom deployed
to Bayelsa and Oladepo Ifedolapo deployed to
Kano passed away during the course of their 3-
week orientation program. Ukeme was said to
have passed away on Thursday, December 1
, after suffering from Diarrhea. Ifedolapo lost her
life due to negligence after they thought she was
faking sickness to avoid parade.
After studying hard and going through the
challenges of Nigerian universities for years, you
now end up losing your life in the course of
serving your fatherland.

3. Waste of time

For some the one year spent serving the country
is a waste of time. After graduating from school,
you have to wait for NYSC. If you are unlucky,
your school will keep you at home for months
before your name appears on the NYSC list. After
service, you also end up in the labour market like
every other person, so what is the essence?
4. Punishment of innocent graduates
NYSC is often referred to as ‘now your suffering
continues’ by people who have gone through the
programme. For some youths, the compulsory one
year service is nothing but punishment. Some
have complained about their orientation camps,
no water, dirty environment, and the food is
nothing to write home about. After orientation
camp, you might be unlucky to be posted to a
community without electricity and good water and
you have to endure this for one year.

5. Opportunity to employ cheap labour
Presently, the federal government pays corps
members N19,800 as allowance every month. To
an average Nigerian, that money is worthless
especially in this time when recession is biting
harder. Corps members are paid peanuts by their
employers. Some pay as low as N10,000. An
establishment which hires a graduate and pays
him or her N100,000 will hire a corps member and
pay N10,000. Is the corps member not a graduate
too?
6. It is no longer safe
There is rising insecurity in various parts of d
country and there are no security measures in
place. Innocent graduates are deployed to these
communities and some end up losing their lives.
Some have lost their lives to election violence. In
March, Okonta Samuel , who was serving in Rivers
state died while helping to facilitate the election
re-run.
If the government thinks the NYSC program is
safe enough, why don't they send their children to
an unknown land to serve their country? Instead,
they always end up serving in the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja or close to home. If they can't
send their children to unknown regions, why
should other people’s children be forced to do
so?

7. It is a waste of fund and resources
Some are of the opinion that the government can
no longer afford the scheme anymore. To them,
the money spent on NYSC orientation camp every
year by the federal government is a waste. For
some, this money is enough to train Nigerian
graduates and equip them with skills that can
help them become self-employed.
Has NYSC done more harm than good? Are you
one of those who want the scheme to be
scrapped, what are your reasons?

Crude oil discovered in Benue state

- With dwindling fortunes and the activities of
militants, the Nigerian government is seriously
looking at the possibility of oil in some states
apart from the Niger Delta
- While Lagos, one of the states that recently
discovered oil, is expecting to start receiving 13
percent derivation, Benue has found a quantity
Exploration activities in Benue state may be
gradually yielding success as a quantity of crude
oil has been discovered.
It is however not yet known if the discovery
would be of commercial quantity, but the deputy
governor of the state, Engr Benson Abounu, is
urging the federal government and the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) not to
relent.

Oil exploration north
The excitement came as the sole administrator of
the Apa local government in the state, Danjuma
Solomon, visited the deputy governor to brief him
on the discovery of the product in his domain.

According to Solomon, oil seepage was
discovered in his local government.
He also spoke about the further discovery of
exploratory oil wells drilled in the 1960s by
Chevron Nig Ltd.
Engr Abounu said, based on results of several
geological investigations, the government was
convinced that the state had oil and that
exploration is just what was needed.

Benue News reports that Abounu urged the
federal government to intensify the search.
In August, 2016 President Muhammadu Buhari
reportedly ordered the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation to search for oil in state.

How to track your vehicle on the cheap, using your smartphone?

New tracking method adapted to all budgets. Lost your car and can’t remember where you parked? It happens to the best of us: wandering aimlessly through parking lots, clicking the panic button on your key chain to get your headlights to illuminate. You don’t need some spendy radio transponder to keep tabs on your car. Uplinking your wheels to the great eye in the sky without breaking the bank is easier than you think. Standalone GPS and radio triangulation units can cost hundreds. And that’s not counting the installation and (frequently hefty) activation and monthly fees associated with whatever service you do choose. For most of us, it’s overkill. The good news is that some of life’s biggest problems seem to be disappearing because of new technology . If you frequently forget where you parked your car, there is a tiny gadget and app that could be what you’re looking for. What is it about? It’s about Trackr , A small and discreet device the size of a coin that is revolutionizing the market. But… How does it work? Very easy! It will take less than five minutes to put it to work. You simply have to pair it with your smartphone and download the free application which will allow you to locate it anytime. Once this is done, you simply have to put it on your key chain, in your wallet or in any object you want to locate always. In this case you just have to hide it in your car. Now just have to open the application on your mobile and you can see on the map the position of your device. If you get to lose your car, simply select “find device” and you’ll get the coordinates of the new location. With Trackr you’ll be able to locate your car at any time In the following video you’ll be able to see it in action: How much is it going to cost me? You’re probably thinking that this device will be very expensive…. nope. This is the best part, you can acquire one for so little , the price is about €29. Not bad considering it gives peace of mind . How to buy it?

Tomb where Jesus was buried opened after 500 years

Pictures obtained by Getty Image have revealed
the tomb where Jesus Christ was buried, and it
has not been opened for the past 50 years.
The debate had raged on for decades over the
truth about where the leader of the Christians
was buried, if it was the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre in Jerusalem or not.

have been laid. Photo: Getty
According to The Mirror UK, pilgrims have been
prevented continuing with their consistent
pilfering of the pieces from the tomb which had
been sealed since year 1555 or even longer.

Some researchers have now revealed inside of the
tomb and according to Archaeologist Fredrik
Hiebert of National Geographic, who partnered in
the project: "The most amazing thing for me was
when we removed the first layer of dust and
found a second piece of marble.
According to tradition the body of Jesus was laid
in a limestone cave following his crucifixion.

"This one was grey, not creamy white like the
exterior, and right in the middle of it was a
beautifully inscribed cross. We had no idea that
was there.

"The shrine has been destroyed many times by
fire, earthquakes, and invasions over the
centuries. We didn’t really know if they had built
it in exactly the same place every time.

"But this seems to be visible proof that the spot
the pilgrims worship today really is the same
tomb the Roman Emperor Constantine found in
the 4th century and the Crusaders revered. It’s
amazing.
